A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dearest friends,

It’s my great pleasure to share Issue Eight with you, in glorious technicolor. This issue’s theme was first inspired by contributor Allison Whittenberg’s cinematic poetry, which takes place, in part, right on the edge of the transition into talkies from silent pictures. Whittenberg’s work provokes thought about all kinds of media, and this issue shows off its engagement with music, visual culture, the built environment, and more with flair. The ghosts of beloved soul artists as well as Godiva float by, not to mention tragic Hollywood figures turned tarnished stars.

The depth of color in Deems Ortega’s streetside snapshots punctuates this phantasmagoria—reminiscent of the high saturation of the Golden Age. And as we learn from Dani Janae’s work, time loops like a snake or a clockhand returning to 12.

This issue is much like coming out of a dream in which you were transported to another era, one in black and white, and are jolted back to present. Upon arrival back into your own world, everything takes on a strange new sheen. What newness can be gleaned in the moment when monochrome comes back to life in color?

With love,

KAC
