MISSION STATEMENT

Founded in 2020 by Kameryn Alexa Carter, Ashby Combahee, Jeanelle Ortiz and Katie Yee, EMERGENT LITERARY is an assemblage of black and brown work. For us, emergent refers to urgency, immediacy, inception and birth. It also refers to the philosophy of emergence as interreliant entities which create a radical new wholeness when combined. We pay homage to the Combahee River Collective, and their foundational work in identity politics and radical liberation. We are inspired by the legacies of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, and Broadside Press. We imagine ourselves posted up in a living room with paper strewn across the floor, eating good and in fellowship with one another.

We hope to provide one such living room here, a place of gathering and collaboration. We represent an expansive community: in terms of geography, identity, genre, and concept. We make an ongoing and serious commitment to black and brown people, to fellowship, and joy. Always.
